What are Demons and the Nephilim? — and that Mayhem before the Flood of Noah?

I have written about Satan, his fallen angels, and have even mentioned the nephilim in past articles, now we will study the basics concerning demons and their creation. There is a lot of confusion about demonic creatures, which I believe is caused by the misuse of terms identifying these creatures in Christian churches, as well as the entertainment media, not to mention translation errors from ancient literature. I have even evaded some details of this subject in the past, just to keep some articles from becoming too long and complicated.

Among biblical scholars, various opinions about the nephilim and demons have evolved, as well as heated debate surrounding the details of their creation history. Most pastors admit their existence, but avoid (or don’t understand) the ugly facts associated with their appearance. I’ve always found it best to gather the evidence and follow the logic, so I will present what I have learned. And even though the information, here presented, is profane and hard to believe, I feel it is time to make it available to everyone, because it appears that demonic activity is on the increase.

In my opinion — because of biblical prophecy and worldly conditions — the end of this age is closing in, so we need accurate information on how to prepare for the coming earthly tribulation and Christ’s return. He may return soon, or not so soon, but I’m confident it will be in the not too distant future. This subject matter is not, for the most part, taught in churches and you may not agree, but at least hear me out, give this article some consideration, and research it for yourself.

Demons are malicious supernatural beings and often considered only as make-believe or mythological creatures. Today they are found in novels, comics, video games, movies, and television programs, but historically they are also found in religious literature which considers them as very real. In the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), a demon is considered a harmful spiritual entity which can sometime cause demonic possession.1 Jews and Christians have references of this in their religious literature as well as do the Arabs; Mohammed himself recognized their existence.2 They are believed to exist in many other religions and cultures, too.

To help us better understand demons (sometimes called ‘unclean’ or ‘evil’ spirits) and their position in God’s universe, a little background information is needed first. We must also identify some of the creatures with whom they are confused — the ‘devil’ for instance. Although the King James version of the Bible errs in sometimes calling demons by that name, most Bible translators use ‘devil’ in reference to Satan, not demons. The dictionary defines the devil as the personal supreme spirit of evil often represented in Christian belief as the tempter of humankind, the leader of all apostate angels, and the ruler of hell, whereas a demon is an evil spirit, or a supernatural being of Greek mythology intermediate between gods and men.3

Angels, Fallen Angels, & Nephilim

Angels were created by God before he created humans (Job 38:4-7) and many angels decided to rebel against the Almighty’s sovereignty and were expelled from heaven. Although the exact term “fallen angels” does not appear in the Bible, it is used as a description for those rebellious creatures led by Satan. He and his associates are trying to usurp God’s rule, so they do their best to turn human’s alliance away from God and toward Satan. It is known that they use deceptions, tricks, and lies to accomplish their goals.

It was not long after the creation of the first human couple that Satan deceived Eve into breaking God’s one simple law. That is why Satan the devil was called the “father of lies” by Jesus when he was speaking to the Jewish leaders who were trying to convict him.“You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44, NRSV).4

Now, nephilim are different creatures and were created later than Adam and Eve, by way of a most abominable method performed by one group of about 200 fallen angels5 that were following Satan. The tragic start of this is mentioned in Genesis, chapter 6.

“When people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose. Then the LORD said, ‘My spirit shall not abide in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred twenty years.’ The Nephilim were on the earth in those days — and also afterward — when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes [mighty men; giants6] that were of old, warriors of renown” (Genesis 6:1-4).

So, the offspring were creatures created by sexual union between some fallen angels and humans. The Hebrew word describing these offspring is nephilim and comes from the verb naphal meaning ‘fall’ (some say it means ‘giants’7). The most natural and probable meaning is those who have fallen, a reference to the nature of their spiritual fathers, the fallen angels.8 They were giants in size, as well as powerful and intelligent hybrid creatures, created by angel-human sexual unions, and made in a sabotage effort against God’s order. Certainly this was genetic manipulation, and possibly involved advanced technology.

“But,” you may say, “how could this be? Are not the angels sexless?” Well, it is true that Jesus made the statement implying that angels are not married or given in marriage (Matthew 22:30), but this is not equivalent to saying that angels are sexless. People who share in the resurrection will surely retain their own personal identity, including gender. So, the gender specific angels appearing in human form, should also be assumed to have gender specific reproductive parts. If “elsewhere in the Bible angels appear in human form, dressed as men, eat, drink, walk, and are subject to being molested (Genesis 18:1,2,8; 19:1,5),”9 why would the performance of sexual acts be any different?

A repercussion from an angel-human union, if really physically possible, would be that the hybrid creature produced may have no possibility of salvation. Fallen humans have been granted that possibility, but fallen angels have not. On which side does the half-angel half-human lie? This raises the question of why would God even have allowed this to happen? There are many questions concerning the theologically paradoxical, and grotesque nature of the progeny of such unions,10 but they have not been fully addressed in the Bible. There are sure to be specific answers, of course, but the Bible contains only what God believes we need to know at this time, and doesn’t always explain the finer details.

Other Sources of Information

The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Although used by Christians for several hundred years after Jesus, it is not part of the biblical canon as used by most Jews and Christian Churches today,11 but it is often referred to by academics and commentators. A translation of this pseudepigraphical book, by biblical scholar Robert Charles, describes the fall of the angels as follows.

“And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.’ And Semjâzâ, who was their leader, said unto them: ‘I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.’

“And they all answered him and said: ‘Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.’ Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it” (Enoch 6:1-6).12

The Book of Jubilees, sometimes called Lesser Genesis, is an ancient Jewish religious work of some 50 chapters. It is considered canonical by some Jews and Christians, as well as considered one of the pseudepigrapha by Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox Churches.13 The Book of Jubilees states the following.

“And it came to pass when the children of men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born unto them, that the angels of God saw them on a certain year of this jubilee, that they were beautiful to look upon; and they took themselves wives of all whom they chose, and they bare unto them sons and they were giants.

“And lawlessness increased on the earth and all flesh corrupted its way, alike men and cattle and beasts and birds and everything that walks on the earth – all of them corrupted their ways and their orders, and they began to devour each other, and lawlessness increased on the earth and every imagination of the thoughts of all men (was) thus evil continually.

“And God looked upon the earth, and behold it was corrupt, and all flesh had corrupted its orders, and all that were upon the earth had wrought all manner of evil before His eyes” (Jubilees 5:1-3).14

This suggestion that even animals were corrupt would explain why animal life was destroyed along with the humans during the Great Flood. Could it be that it was one of Noah’s jobs to find two of each ‘uncorrupted’ animal types to bring aboard the Ark? Were the mythological man-animal creatures (e.g., centaurs, etc.) of ancient times real? Were the fallen angels technologically corrupting the DNA15 of all life on earth? So many questions!

You still have not explained . . . What are Demons? Where are they?

The nephilim were hybrid creatures produced by the mating of fallen angels and human women. These creatures were mostly destroyed when God flooded the earth. Humankind can and do die, but angels do not die. The flood killed most humans and the human aspect (or physical side) of the hybrid angel-human creatures,16 but the angel side (or spirit side) lived on as disembodied spirits. These disembodied spirits are the demons, the unclean or evil spirits — and they still exist today.

“And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, and from the holy Watchers17 is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling” (Enoch 15:8-10).18

“Demons are the disembodied spirits of the giant nephilim produced by some fallen angels and the women of earth. Noah’s flood destroyed their bodies, but now they are disembodied spirits looking for a body through which they might once again affect their evil ways.”19 These disembodied evil or unclean spirits of this world are earthbound. Any grotesque or dreadful pictures of demons in movies and books must all be false, because the fact is that they have no body of their own.

“I ain’t got no body!”

Where are these spirits now? The demons and the fallen angels who created them are restricted to the earth. “God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment,” (2 Peter 2:4). As for the demons, except for visits of short duration upon the surface, they are now kept in darkness, concealed away within the earth, until the judgement day (also see: Jude 6).

There is one way they can escape this darkness of hell and have some freedom of movement; it is to possess or occupy a host body. Bible teacher and author, Derek Prince, stated, “I describe demons as disembodied spirit beings that have an intense craving to occupy physical bodies. Apparently their first choice is a human body, but rather than remain in a disembodied condition, they are willing to enter even the body of an animal” (see Luke 8:32–33).20 Another author, David Hernandez, adds, “Demons seek to possess bodies and seem rather uncomfortable being outside of them. From Scripture, we see that both fallen angels and holy angels have bodies. In contrast, demons greatly desire bodies because they do not have them. Demons are clingy, needy, angry, tormented creatures. That is the first distinction between fallen angels and demons.”21

So keep this in mind, when Christian commentators and Bible teachers teach that demons are only Satan’s evil angels, just remember that the true facts do not support their theory (unless they are using the KJV which mistranslates ‘demon’ to ‘devil’.22).

Jesus and his apostles removed many demons from human victims. Matthew 8:28-34 tells one such story in detail about Jesus casting out many demons from an insane man. The demons didn’t want to return to the dark abyss and asked permission to enter some pigs instead. This request was granted. You can read my full study of this event by visiting the link listed at the end of this article.23 That story indicates much about the attributes of demons. They knew who Jesus was and that he had power over them. They knew their time was limited. They could speak and think, and they could control their host. They could even affect the physical and mental facilities to cause illness.

Certainly all illnesses are not demon-produced, but the Bible shows that demons can and do afflict the body with problems. Examples, beside that mentioned above, are: (1) the dumb man, controlled by a demon (Matthew 9:22); (2) the young deaf and dumb boy foaming at the mouth, with a self-injury tendency or prone to suicidal attempts, having convulsions, and controlled by a demon, (Mark 9:17-27); (3) the woman with deformities and controlled by a demon (Luke 13:11); and more.

It is likewise in today’s world, with obsessive and compulsive problems (sex, pornography, alcohol, drugs, etc.) — although most such habits are not necessarily demonic possession, they should at least be considered as possibilities. Since our spirit is the ‘inner self’ that allows our connection to God, it seems logical that Satan wants control of it and will attempt this capture through his demons.24

Can demons be controlled by humans? Can they read your mind?

Although occultism and other magical practices often imply that a demon may be conjured and controlled with ritualistic traditions, realistically that is doubtful. The Bible states that their leader is Satan and, since the Bible also states that Satan is a liar and deceiver, any assumed applied control by humans is probably a deception and actually used to control the gullible human practitioner.

There are no verses in the Bible that indicate Satan is omniscient or all-knowing and nothing is mentioned that he knows our thoughts or reads our mind. Since all other evil creatures are of a lessor authority than Satan, they do not have those attributes, either. We are told that only God can know what is in our mind (example: Daniel 2:27-28), but evil spirits can deduce what is on our minds. They know exactly what we are reading or watching on TV, and they overhear our conversations including our “private” words. They see our physical responses, and no doubt they are skilled at reading our expressions. They see us when other people can’t, any time they wish.25

Although there is no evidence of demons reading our minds, they do have a special ability of living within us and experiencing the functions of our body both physically and mentally. So, “they can act upon the imaginations, thoughts, emotions and desires . . . [and] when they find a passion alive and active in us, they can play upon these passions. . . .”26

I’m not sure how a licensed medical practitioner would research or gather the data, but Rebecca Brown, M.D. has stated, “Demons tear apart a physical body on the molecular level. They do this in such a way that devastating damage can be done to the various organs without altering the appearance of the cellular structures under our microscopes. The damage they do usually requires treatment with physical medicines, nutrition, etc., but the physician can know only by direct revelation from the Lord, what is really wrong with such a patient and what treatment to use.”27

From all indications, it is evident that Satan and his followers can fully observe our actions, therefore they can craft temptations to play on our weaker traits — they will attack our body and our character. And they will lie and deceive us — they can and will influence our thinking.

Here is a brief synopsis of what we have learned about demons. Demons were not made by God. Some of the fallen angels, by way of their own free will, decided to create a new creature through genetic manipulation. They engineered this by cross-breeding angels with humans (and other animals), which produced half-breed creatures called nephilim. When the earth flooded in Noah’s day, the animal side of the nephilim died, but the incomplete remaining angelic side lived on as a fractional disembodied tortured spirit being.

These demons are self-aware beings of a spiritual nature only. Some angels have been known to materialize a body at will, but demons are earthly creatures that do not have that ability. To live for any length of time on the surface of the earth, they must possess and control a body of a human or animal. Angels can accomplish work with or without a body, but demons must possess bodies to accomplish any task. Satan is the leader of both fallen angels and demons and they help to implement his agenda.

What can we do to protect ourselves?

How do we protect ourselves? If something is said or done and it is true, then everything ‘said and done’ will follow the truth written in the Bible. If it is false, then it is not from God. Check and recheck; remember that Satan is a deceiver, and has been since the creation of humankind in the garden in Eden.28

We should stay away from spiritism and mediumship, even if just in playing games or participating in certain holiday activities. Such actions open our mind for entry of controlling evil spirits. Sometimes devices are used, like an old-time Ouija board or some modern high-tech electronic device. The purpose is to mediate communication between spirits and human beings. The Bible gives specific instructions concerning this approach, “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them” (Leviticus 19:31, NIV).

Can Satan arrange for fallen angels and demons to work within the Church (or the government)? The answer to that question is yes! Remember the very words of Jesus Christ, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24). And in the first letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul, stressed that Timothy’s pastoral duties involved guarding the truth and refuting the heretics29 when he said, “in later times some will renounce the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:1b-2).

There has been a universal war between good and evil even since before the sinful fall of humankind in the garden of Eden, but we are given good and sound biblical advice and instruction to help us stay on the good side. The Apostle Paul ends his letter to the Ephesians explaining about this spiritual war being waged.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil . . .” (Ephesians 6:11-12, ESV).

And then, Paul goes on to tell us how to personally fight the battle. “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” (Ephesians 6:13-18, ESV).

Jesus said that “For just like the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. For in those days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark. And they knew nothing until the flood came and took them all away. It will be the same at the coming of the Son of Man” (Matthew 24:37–39).

Do Jesus’ words mean increased demonic activity in addition to Satanic activity? Could what Jesus said be a reference, not just to the increased wickedness in the world, but also to such things as cloning, genetic engineering, gene splicing, artificial creation of superhuman hybrids, and much more? This meddling into God’s creations is going on in scientific and secret laboratories around the world, today. Are today’s scientists learning and applying the knowledge and technology of fallen angels, and using it for evil nephilim-type creations just as was done in the ancient days of Noah?

  1. The outlaw student said: “Although the King James version of the Bible errs in sometimes calling demons by that name”.
I searched the word demon in a King James Bible… ZERO. You may want to correct that quote.

    • Thank you for reading this article and I appreciate your comment. You are, however, misreading the quote.

The full reference in the article is: “We must also identify some of the creatures with whom they are confused — the ‘devil’ for instance. Although the King James version of the Bible errs in sometimes calling demons by that name, most Bible translators use ‘devil’ in reference to Satan, not demons.”

I meant that the KJV errs by sometimes calling demons by the name of ‘DEVIL’. In addition, it does sometimes call them evil sprits or unclean spirits, etc.

  2. I do so appreciate this teaching for I believe the same. But some question my theory that demons are the spirits of the dead giants, who were birthed though Angel and woman.
    I’m glad I found you.

    • Thank you for your comment and I’m glad you found some support in this article. Most Christians do not believe the facts presented, as that is not the way they were taught in church, and they have not done any research to find out the facts. Anyone who is in doubt can begin by checking the research notes I present. However, the Bible does imply that most who have ears will not hear, and most that have eyes will not see the truth.

  4. Theres a problem with some of this. Yiure forgetting Lilith, and the people made before adam and eve which is clearly mentioned in the 7 days of creation. LET US make MAN in our image, and they created male and female. Cain and Abel are believed to be twins from two different fathers. Lilith was explained to have male sperm. Of course do your research. Cain was worried what OTHERS would think and left and took a wife. Reread the beginning slowly.

    • Thank you for reading this article and for sharing your opinion. Some people believe that Cain and Able were twins produced by two fathers, Adam, as well as the reptilian creature that tempted Eve. This theory is thousands of years old. If true, that would shed light on God’s wording in Genesis 3:15, “And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring,” (Genesis 3:15a, KJV).

Also, some people believe there are two creation stories in Genesis. ‘Lilith’ is only mentioned in the Holy Bible once, at Isaiah 34:14, in reference to wildlife. This Hebrew noun may be related to the Hebrew word for ‘night’.

In rabbinic texts, ‘Lilith’ was the name of a female demon from before Adam and Eve. And some believe that in Mesopotamian mythology, she was the first wife of Adam.

    • Yes, “reread the beginning, slowly.” Then, go unfold a burrito and stare at the greasy tortilla long enough, and you’ll also see the face of Mary, too. You’re seeing what you want to see.

(1 CORINTHIANS 14:33) There’s no esoteric/occult knowledge hidden in the Word, people. To suggest such a thing is to say that God intends His elect to dwell in darkness rather than light, thus calling Him a liar.

“Lilith” never existed. The concept of this woman has its origins in Judaic mythology and occult practices (kabbalah), all of which are damnable demoniac superstitions and religious/magical doctrines.

  5. Enoch is a speculative commentary with some truths and some heretical falsities. The inter testament era is full of writings rejected by the Bible and scholars alike. Now that Enoch is quoted in some part in the NT is not surprising as truth is truth no matter where you find it. Enoch is directly linked to occult Gnosticism and new age theosophy. Encyl. Judaica says the exclusively Jews where the torch holders of Gnosticism learned in Babylon. All care must be taken in referencing these books and the Jewish Talmud which have treasures and trash all jumbled up.

Now concerning demons the word is out we read of precious little to nothing of demons until and compartmentalized in the time of Christ. Biblical literature is unanimous in agreeing that demons only ever appeared in this era of the Messianic incarnation.
Sons of God – is a reference to Adam.

Gospel genealogies title Adam – son of God. In a state of grace and protection from God. To read more into the text is to go the route of the lies and deceptions. I can assure you those books will bring you face to face with pure occultism and Enochian magic.

We are said to have the right to be called sons of God who have been reborn. God did say my spirit will not always strive with man Genesis 6:3, They became mighty men – like Nimrod they ruled like dictators and brutes. As we say the giants of industry or General so and so is a super hero. I always like to keep things simple in terms of the text.

He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. What do we fear but to be outside of Christ! Thanks for your super thought provoking articles. Nothing could be more necessary in our day.

  6. I’m a little upset that you used naked pictures of a man and woman in your story. Couldn’t you found something else? Christian site should have christian pictures.

    • I am glad you have expressed your opinion, however I won’t debate your sentiment, except to say that I didn’t use any pornographic images and did use only images representative of the subject matter. Besides — as mentioned previously — we have plenty of notices on site about some articles having ‘adult content’.

Also, there is a notice in the footnote of every page saying, “If under the age of 13, or the age of majority in your country, you may use this website only with the consent of a parent or guardian. Please be aware that, although the majority of posts found on this website are for general audiences, there may be certain controversial, mature, or adult content.”

  7. I have never heard of demons explained this way. It makes a lot of sense. Now I understand why they want to posess people. It is scary.

    • Thanks for your input and I appreciate that you took the time to read this article. I see evil increasing and we all must be aware of the methods Satan uses against God’s people. We need not be afraid and will be fine, if we follow the advice of putting on the armor of God.
