Dr. Jehovah

My oldest daughter asked me, not long ago, if I thought God was a scientist. Most people believe science and religion don’t mix, so being a believer of our Creator, she probably had a recent religious discussion with a work mate. That usually is the background event leading up to asking dad for his opinion. I answered in the affirmative for I’ve always believe that God set up this universe with specific physical laws to lay out the reality we live in, and part of our education is to learn these laws and use them to benefit humankind. In this way, God is our teacher and that is why I titled this article “Dr. Jehovah.” The title ‘Doctor’ is a Latin word meaning ‘teacher’ and it is, also, an academic degree indicating very knowledgeable in a certain field of study. Since God created everything, I figure that must make him the doctor of the universe.

Science has added a lot of understanding and validity to various biblical subjects and, because of this, I feel that the bible is even more logical and more believable than it was just a century ago. There are dozens of books, and hundreds of articles and blogs on the internet, about different science-related scripture, so this treatise will not bore you with repetition. We will only explore some relatively lesser-known, hidden, or bizarre scientific ideas, as they can be related to biblical subjects. Most of the thoughts presented here are based entirely on fact and/or accepted research, but a few are speculative, although entirely plausible; just keep an open mind and allow your imagination to be sparked. The reality you think you know may change.

Quantum Entanglement

In modern physics, there is very active research into two mind-bending discoveries known as “quantum entanglement” and “non-locality.” Quantum entanglement is an observed situation that occurs, when pairs or groups of extremely small particles interact, in ways such that the properties of each particle cannot be described independently of the others; although no force passes between them, they are connected and act as one.

When the entangled particles are separated, the interaction continues and this fact, known as non-locality, is a phenomenon that Einstein called “spooky action at a distance.” If you measure or tamper with one particle of an entangled pair, the other particle perceives that the measurement or action has been performed, even if separated by distance, and acts accordingly. The particles – or even groups of particles – react instantly and in unison, to any events without regard to distance or the limits imposed by the speed of light. In such a case, the groups of particles are not each individual, but a single undivided whole. In other words, two or more particles, be they protons, electrons, atoms, or molecules, could be entangled whereas one will affect the others instantaneously, even if at very great distances of separation.1 This effect has already been demonstrated across hundreds of miles, but believed to be true across distances measured in light years.

An even stranger discovery, in connection with this research, is that “a particle’s behavior changes depending on whether there is an observer or not. It basically suggests that reality is a kind of illusion and exists only when we are looking at it. Some particles, such as photons or electrons, can behave both as particles and as waves.”2 As physicist Niels Bohr3 said, “If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet.”

Dr. Dean Radin, researcher, author, and previous senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, wrote: “Physicists have even speculated that entanglement extends to everything in the universe, because as far as we know, all energy and all matter emerged out of a single, primordial Big Bang. And thus everything came out of the chute already entangled. Such proposals suggest that despite everyday appearances, we might be living within a holistic, deeply interconnected reality.”4

Now, you may ask, how does all this scientific stuff about the new physics relate to the bible. Well, a radio interview of physicist Dr. Michio Kaku , by Deepak Chopra, should get your attention of how this may relate. Chopra “commented on this non-local phenomenon, saying, ‘You know, the more I hear about quantum entanglement, it sounds like a mathematical description of omniscience, omnipresence, [and] omnipotence.’ Dr. Kaku responded, ‘That’s what it leads to. Their theory says that I exist because you look at me, somebody looks at you so you exist, so who looks at her? Who looks at us? Well, God.’5 Mind before matter is the correct order of the equation to creation, not the other way around. Matter is nothing less than an expression of divine intelligence giving it the command: ‘Make it so.’”6 That is a similar thought of what was on a bumper-sticker I used to have on a truck, many years ago, which said: “Big Bang Theory: God said it, and BANG, it happened.”

This science is in its infancy, but scientists are already considering future use for this new knowledge in computers, communications, cryptography, and possibly, teleportation. Who knows what other uses will be found in the years ahead. But, for now, just contemplating this solid scientific research adds expanded thought and understanding to the creation story in the book of Genesis; as an example: “Then God said, ‘Let there be light;’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3).

Biocommunication

In 1966, polygraph expert Cleve Backster was watering plants in his New York laboratory when he wondered if his equipment could measure the rate at which water rose from the roots to the leaves. Attaching electrodes on a root and a leaf, he measured the electrical resistance. He didn’t get the response he expected, so wondered if injuring the plant would give any kind of response. He decided to burn one of the leaves and visualized how he would do this. In his book he states, “the very moment the imagery of burning that leaf entered my mind, the polygraph recording pen moved rapidly to the top of the chart! No words were spoken, no touching the plant, no lighting of matches, just my clear intention to burn the leaf. The plant recording showed dramatic excitation. To me this was a powerful, high-quality observation.”7 Backster later conducted extensive research relating to the observed electrical responses in various live plants and at the cellular level in other living organisms. His research in biocommunication has produced responses sometimes called the “Backster Effect.”

Experiments with living eggs indicated that eggs that were left grouped together for an extended time had some kind of relationship with each other – like those packaged in the same egg carton. Using elaborate apparatus, he had a fresh egg randomly dropped into boiling water and his instruments indicated that the other eggs would produce a signal as soon as the chosen egg hit the water. This experiment was repeated many times with the same result. Moving forward, he arranged that all eggs would be dropped into the water at varying intervals, but this time, even after repeated experiments, the reaction only occurred after the very first egg dropped, and nothing after the remaining eggs hit the boiling water. He said, “I did learn something from those initial attempts, including the possibility that the eggs were in some manner communicating with each other.”8

Based on this insight, Backster said he needed to re-evaluate his earlier rejection of prayer and meditation being mere speculation, because that rejection was based on a lack of scientific evidence. “This reevaluation,” he said, was “reinforced by current concepts within quantum physics, such as non-locality, [having] resulted in significant escalation of my own spiritual awareness.”9 He indicated that those later eggs, after receiving communication of the first egg’s demise, appeared to have gone insensitive, a situation similar to “fainting.” “In Eastern philosophies, there are frequent references to a ‘oneness,’ involving a capability to communicate, on a need to communicate basis, among most all living things. Some suggest this to be the origin of the blessing, practiced by man, in effect giving notice before ingesting food on the table.”10 Doesn’t this give insight to a possible additional reason for why God expects us to bless the food we eat? This research should move us to understand that “everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer” (1 Timothy 4:4–5).

Several decades later, Russian physicist Konstantin Korotkov expanded on those experiments. He verified Backster’s studies with a state-of-the-art optical and digital equipment mechanism he invented, called GDV [see note #12]. “He hooked up a potted plant to his GDV machine and asked his researchers to think of different emotions – anger, sadness, joy – and then positive and negative intentions toward the plant. Whenever a participant mentally threatened the plant, its energy field diminished. The opposite occurred if people approached the plant with water or feelings of love.”11

It is amazing that just the thought of doing something can affect the object of that thought. This gives special insight to Jesus’s statement: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27–28). Does this mean that a sinful thought can be transmitted and received? This makes the tenth commandment especially intriguing, considering the new research. It basically prohibits desires, or covetous feelings toward persons or things belonging to others. “The genius of the commandment lies in its therapeutic nature.”12 We must realize all evil lies within ourselves – in our desires. Jesus said, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you” (Mark 7:20-23, NLT).

The Intelligent Heart and Our DNA

The bible indicates that we have inherited sin and death: “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). For millennia people accepted, on faith, this idea of inherited sin, but we now have proof that this is possible. There is science behind the fact that things we do can alter our DNA, which can be passed down through heredity. This science, called epigenetics, is the study of how factors, outside of DNA, can influence changes in gene expression.13 An article on the website “Natural News” attests to this fact and indicates DNA can be changed by intendion, magnetic fields, heart coherence, and mental states.14

Notice that one of the factors that can change the DNA is “heart coherence.” During the past few decades, it has been discovered that the heart is much more complex than just preforming like a mechanical pump. There is now scientific evidence of the heart sending emotional and intuitive signals to help govern the body by directing and aligning many bodily systems, so that they can function in harmony with one another. “Although the heart is in constant communication with the brain, we now know that it makes many of its own decisions.”15

Doc Childre, founder of the Institute of HeartMath, tells an interesting story about the European inventor of the pendulum clock. The inventor noticed that the pendulums on his collection of clocks were swinging in unison, although they weren’t synchronized that way when started. He then restarted all the pendulums swinging differently, and to his amazement, all the pendulums, once again, began to sync their movement over time. The inventor never solved this mystery, but scientists later did so. It was discovered that the largest pendulum was pulling the other pendulums into sync. The term for this is “entrainment,” a type of synchronization, and is now found to be prevalent throughout nature. Childre states, “When your body is in entrainment, its major systems work in harmony. Because the heart is the strongest biological oscillator in the human system, the equivalent of the strongest pendulum in a collection of clocks, the rest of the body’s systems can be pulled into entrainment with the heart’s rhythms.”16

Obtaining entrainment or synchronization of the body’s systems with particular heart rhythms leads to a positive mental attitude called heart coherence. This heart coherence “is associated with high performance, stress reduction, greater emotional stability, and numerous health benefits.” An individual can induce this coherence through biofeedback techniques, thereby influencing health significantly, including generating tranquility and emotional stability.17

As stated above, heart coherence, positive mental states, and intention can change our DNA, so it is within our power to change it toward righteous, just as the bible states that sin changed it toward evil. If the tenth commandment has some therapeutic nature and all evil lies within ourselves, maybe righteous thoughts alter our DNA for the better and help change our own, as well as our children’s, future.

Jesus said, in the Gospel of Luke, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart” (Luke 6:45). And in the letter to the Philippians, Timothy says, “Dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me — everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians, 4:8–9).

Conclusion

If God is a scientist, then the universe we live in can be viewed as his laboratory and our world is, but one experiment in that lab. If God is a teacher, then we can learn about his experiment and gain knowledge, not only about him, but also about his creations. Although many Christians believe science has nothing to do with faith, learning the science behind God’s creation can help us understand him as well as his purpose. Author Robert Crawford wrote, “In the past scientists have said that God has two books, one of scripture and one of nature. If this is so, then religion and science should complement one another as Copernicus, Galileo and Newton believed.”18 So, continue to read scripture, of course, but don’t be afraid to keep up with scientific knowledge, for you can be learning about Jehovah’s physical universe, as well as his spiritual one.
